Izaki Ryujiro's Birthday Event

I made my second trip in two weeks to Tokyo on January 31st, to go to Izaki Ryujiro's birthday event. This event has been announced for what seems like a long time, and I had been excited for it since the moment I bought my ticket. Out of all the events I had tickets for at the time, it was probably the one I was most excited for. So, the day finally came!

When I went into the building, I found they were selling photosets. I vaguely vaguely remember when they announced the event originally they said they would have them, but there had been no further details since (until they posted a blog about it the day before, but I didn't see it). I immediately bought all 5 sets (which I will scan later, they all look amazing!). Then, I went into the hall. My seats for both shows were good, the first show was the least good of the 2, on row D.

Soramu was the MC for today, and after his performances doing speeches during Tenimyu I wondered how the hell he got the job, and I'm still wondering. XD First, they had him do the pre-show announcements I figure he was only reading from a sheet but he couldn't even do that properly and kept stopping and starting and stumbling and he got so many laughs before he even came on the stage. Then, he appeared in person. He started going on and on about how nervous he was and how "I'm the master of ceremonies!" and then suddenly he said, "wait, does everyone know who I am?" and everyone did and he seemed relieved that he didn't have to introduce himself. Finally, he introduced Izaki who appeared on the stage.

This is what they looked like, by the way:

Soramu had this clipboard on which he had written his "MC notes", and the first thing on his list was to talk about the stage plays Izaki has appeared in. He said, "2014 to 2015: Musical Tennis no Oujisama.... I wrote the dates." He said he didn't want to talk too much about it because with the both of them there they could end up spending the whole show talking about it. He had absolutely no questions himself, so he asked US to provide them.

By the way, each time Soramu mentioned one of the plays he had been in, he asked us to put our hands up if we had been to watch it. For some reason Izaki got SO embarrassed and he didn't even want to look at us. It was kind of cute but I'm not sure what he expected. We're his fans, of course we went! XD

[This is when this report gets confusing because I think some of these questions were from the second show, but it doesn't really matter.]

Some questions he got regarding Tenimyu:

Please become Kamio Akira.
He did Akira's "Rhythm ni noru ze!" line. His voice cracked at the end of it (his voice goes quite high at the end and he commented on how it had been a while since he did that.

Please tell us an episode about Afternoon Six (the fake boyband they created with some of the cast.
Soramu kind of took over this question, but he said when they went to Hong Kong, they were all walking down a street together and suddenly ahead of them there were huge posters for Arashi and One Direction ("even in Hong Kong!"). Soramu said that when he saw them looking so cool he immediately put on a "cooler" walk, and all the others did the same. He wondered if people would think they were actually Arashi (they didn't).

What do you want to do with the Fudomine cast in the future?
He said waterfall training, or go to the Fuji-Q Highland amusement park, or go mountain climbing. He said all of the Fudomine cast are very sports orientated. Soramu said he wanted to do waterfall training so he said they should go. Izaki said it would probably end up being just the two of them but that they should force Macha along too. Izaki said he would probably be reluctant and go "ehhhhh?!" but that they would force him along anyway.

About Super Dangan Ronpa 2:

Soramu said he hadn't been to watch this one, so he asked us in the audience what we thought. A girl on the front row said she had cried, and Soramu had been surprised but Izaki said there were scenes that might make you cry, and he asked if it had been his scene. It was.

About Comic Jack:

Did you get any advice from Kento who was in the original production?
He said he didn't get any advice but that he had watchd the original version on DVD and had been impressed.

This part finished so quickly because Soramu had nothing for him. XD He looked at Izaki and said "what now?" and Izaki was like, "well, you're the MC, so..." Soramu decided to ask us for some more questions. These are the general questions he got asked:

Your way of holding your mike is really cool.
When the girl said this, Izaki looked at his hand, thanked the girl with an awkward grin, and moved it into a "less cool" position in embarrassment. Then once he put his hand back to where it had been, Soramu tried to mimic it.

What is your favourite sushi topping?
He said he likes salmon. He said when he was in high school his part time job was at a sushi place, and he said he would sometimes eat pieces of salmon when no one was looking (... that's a good way of losing your job...).

Out of all of the roles you have played who would you want to be friends with?
He said he liked them all so much it was hard to decide, but Soramu forced him to make a decision so he decided on Fuyuhiko from Super Dangan Ronpa 2 because he said he's awkward and doesn't have any friends so he'd like to be one.

If you hadn't become an actor, what did you want to become?
He said he couldn't really remember but that when he was young he'd wanted to become a swindler. XD He said he couldn't imagine himself doing any kind of desk work and always thought he'd have some kind of "different" job. Soramu said, "yeah, a swindler is definitely different."

Do you drink alcohol?
He said he didn't drink it often at all and would usually choose cola if he went out (yay, same as me!) but he said that whenever he does drink alcohol, he can't stop laughing. He also gave us a demonstration.

What were you like as a child?
He said he was mischievous, and liked soccer.

Please try 110% high tension.
He did. He exhausted himself in about 5 seconds.

After the talk show, they did a seat lottery for prizes. He gave away 8 signed cheki pictures of himself, and then some personal items: a plushie of some anime character I didn't know, a stack of his favourite mangas, some cologne (that he and Soramu both tried out before giving it away... Izaki said, "ah, we're going to smell the same...") and a neck warmer. By the way, Soramu sniffed both the plushie and the neck warmer, who knows what he was checking for. XD

Then they both had to look through the scribbled notes Soramu had to find out what to do next. It was 12.45 and the handshake event was to start at 1, so he had Izaki give his thanks and message to us all, and then left the stage.

With that finished, it was time for the handshake omiokuri! I realised while watching the people before me that we had a lot of time to talk to him, so at the time I was glad that I'd thought of a few things I wanted to say to him. By the way, all of our conversations (for this and the second show) were in Japanese. I went up to him and handed over my gift (keeping what it is to myself, but I worked hard on it!), and as he was handing the present to the staff he looked back at me and said, "Josie, right?" and at that moment I basically forgot everything I'd had in my head. I just blurted out "you remembered!" and then he said, "yep! you teach English to kids right?" I told him that was right and told him it was fun, and he said "I want to come too!" I told him he should come and that I want to teach him more English. He said "okay!" and then our time was up so I had to leave.

After the first show, I kind of wandered around and sat around and did nothing much because there was basically nothing in the area (except for that huge fish market but I don't want to look at fish...), spamming Twitter with my report and smiling a lot. Before I knew it, it was time to go back in for the second show. My seat for the 2nd show was on the front row right in the middle. What made it even nicer was that miraculously I was sitting next to the same girl as the first show. We had chatted a lot and exchanged Twitters, and she'd asked me to add a message to a board she'd put together for Izaki that some people had written things on. It was nice to be next to her again.

Soramu did the announcements for the second show too, but he got so mixed up with his words that Izaki took the microphone from him and did himself for a while before giving it back to Soramu close to the end. Then, as before Soramu came onto the stage. Again he was relieved that he didn't have to introduce himself. He asked who had come to the first show and told us he was less nervous this time and was going to be a proper "master of ceremonies". He said he had prepared some questions this time (helpful as an MC). Then he introduced Izaki to the stage. At first, Izaki just peeked around the corner and shouted "rhythm ni noru ze!" and then disappeared again, and then they actually played the song in the background when he eventually reappeared again (he said, "who was that just now??")

Soramu said that the first show didn't have much of a "birthday feel" to it, so he said he had prepared some birthday-related some questions. Just then the lights went down and both of them seemed as surprised as each other. Birthday music started playing and the lights came back on, and Soramu was miming along to the song, and then the music suddenly stopped, and then started again, and the staff produced this tiny little birthday cake from backstage. Soramu genuinely had no idea what was going on. He said "even though I'm the MC these weird things are happening!!" They put the cake on the table, and Soramu kind of looked at it and went ".... now what do we do with it?" Some fans suggested they should eat it, but in the end it just sat there on the table until the staff eventually took it away from the hot lights.

Soramu's birthday related questions:

What was your best birthday surprise?
He said when he was in high school he walked into his classroom on his birthday and a big group of his classmates let off party poppers. He said they had prepared a cork board with messages for him on it.

What would you give to a girlfriend for her birthday?
Soramu said he would give flowers and then asked Izaki. Izaki said he wasn't sure but that he'd make something, maybe. Soramu said "Make something? Like cookies?" Izaki replied, "do I look like I can make cookies??" and eventually decided he'd give flowers too. Soramu said, "okay, so your answer is home-made cookies." XD

What is the best present you have received?
"The corkboard I mentioned before." Soramu: "........ what's a 'corkboard'?" That guy.

Questions from the audience:

Aside from the Tenimyu cast, who do you want to work with again?
He said Taizo Shiina, who was double cast in his role in Super Dangan Ronpa 2. He said even though they had appeared in the same stageplay, they hadn't actually been on stage together. He said he'd like them to play siblings or enemies. Soramu commented that Taizo is really cool and Izaki said, "yeah, he's so so cool" in a small voice.

What was your first impressions of each other when you met?
Soramu said he couldn't remember when he and Izaki had first met. But he said his impression now is that Izaki is very diligent. Izaki said of Soramu, "I thought he was really like Tachibana. BUT (he really emphasised this but) when he spoke that totally disappeared."

If you were going to die tomorrow, what would be the last thing you ate?"
Izaki said immediately "white rice!" and Soramu said, "Ah, we found a common feature!" And then they high touched each other in celebration of having something in common.

Which of your photosets do you like best?
He admitted that he hadn't seen the finished products but he seemed to remember shooting some where he was dressed in a red checked outfit. There was a set like that so everyone kind of nodded, and then when Soramu produced the photos the one we thought he meant was wrong and the one he liked best hadn't made it into the final sets.

Please tell us an episode where you and your sister got along well.
He said that when they stayed at hotels together they would play the game where the space in between the beds becomes shark-infested waters. Soramu said he used to play it too but with lava. It said it gives it a hotter feeling.

What kind of cake do you like?
Izaki said he likes fruit tart. Soramu looked solemnly down at the cake on the table and said "what about short cake?" he said he liked that too. Soramu then said, "so your favourite is strawberry tart." Izaki said, "FRUIT tart." That poor little cake.

Can you do a self-introduction in English?
This was my question, of course. When I asked it, he jumped right to his feet and went "Yeah!!". Then he said, "Hello! My name is Ryujiro Izaki! I like SUKIYAKI!! It's nice!! It's good smell!!" It seems like he was introducing sukiyaki more than he was introducing himself, but it wasn't so bad I guess. He did a lot of mumbling in between. After he'd finished, Soramu looked at me and asked me how it was, and I told him to try a little harder. XD Everyone laughed, including Izaki thankfully.

By the way, about halfway through the questioning Soramu started randomly asking people what things they liked about Izaki before letting them ask their questions. Izaki got so embarrassed that he was like "what are you doing?!" and kept apologising to the fans and saying, "it's fine, don't answer that."

Eventually, I guess Izaki got tired of answering questions because he said "Let's have some questions for Soramu!" Soramu argued against it, "it's your event!" but Izaki didn't care and asked for some questions. A girl asked Soramu to do a "cool" and "cute" pose. Izaki stood up and stood aside beckoning for Soramu to go ahead. He really did not want to do it but his "cool" pose was him standing with his arms in the air (not so cool at all) and for his "cute" pose he stood in a running pose like Izaki would do for Akira.

After that, they allowed one last question for Izaki and of course the girl asked him to do the same. For his cool pose he was sprawled out against the wall holding his tie (very cool) and for his "cute" pose he consulted his photosets and chose one where he was holding a book up to his face with just his eyes showing (he used Soramu's clipboard).

For the lottery this time, he gave away 6 chekis, one of his favourite movies on DVD signed by him (I didn't see what the movie was) and a jersey he had since high school. I was super close to getting something because the seats two away from me on both sides got prizes (so unlucky!) and also the seat I was in for the first show got one lol. But the girls nearby were super nice so they showed the things they won to us (a cheki and the jersey).

Then it was handshake time again! I apologised to him for being a harsh teacher but I told him that I really did want him to do his best. He told me that he wanted to work hard too because he wants to visit England some day. I mentioned that in his Q&A from the Fudomine pamphlet he said he wanted to visit Australia too and he said that he did. I told him he definitely needs to work hard to learn more English and he said he would do his best. He told me to do my best at work, and then I left.

Honestly when it was all over I really wanted to go back to the beginning again because it had been so much fun. Seeing Izaki as himself and having two whole hours of talk show from him. I felt like I learned a lot of stuff about him that I didn't know before. And as bad as he was as an MC, it was so much fun seeing Soramu again and seeing the pair of them interacting since they clearly get along well. It really didn't matter that Soramu wasn't a strong MC because it somehow made it even more fun. And of course, meeting Izaki again and being able to talk to him again was amazing, especially with him remembering my name, my job AND where I'm from. All that information he has in his head. I feel lucky.

With the event done, I went back to Shinjuku and spent two hours in karaoke badly singing Tenimyu songs (I have to admit, trying to sing a song that is sung by pretty much the whole cast, which has overlapping parts AND people yelling stuff all the way through that for some reason they just have to display on the screen doesn't help) while I waited for my bus. It was a fun end to the day. And then I got on the bus and fell asleep and woke up in Nagoya (I've never done that before, usually I wake up when they stop at rest stops so I was super surprised when I woke to the announcement that we'd be arriving in Nagoya soon).
